2013-4 Nuvein Board Nomination Season

NuveinNomSeason

The Nuvein Foundation for Literature and the Arts is now soliciting and accepting statements of interest from individuals that wish to join the organization in helping promote its mission of spreading the arts, advocating for arts education, providing art showcase events, and providing artistic resources and opportunities to developing, aspiring, and established artists in the SGV and beyond.

The 2013-2014 Nuvein Nomination Season begins November 15th and ends December 15 of 2013.

For those that have already come forward and offered assistance and have expressed interest, many thanks. The Nuvein Board will meet to discuss nominations and review statements from those that have declared interest in the months ahead.

There are many ways to help with the mission of Nuvein such as volunteering at events, performing at events, serving on either our advisory board to develop programs and events, serving on program or event committees, or serving on the executive board that handles budgetary, legal, and all other technical and logistical matters that the organization, promotion, development of evens, scholarships, and other resources require. Of course, one of the best way to support Nuvein is to support and attend our events, encourage fellow artists to showcase and participate at these events, and finally enjoy (hopefully) being a part of our events.

Statements of Interest should simply provide:

  • a quick background on your experience with arts related organizations
  • and/or your current practice/exercising of an artistic discipline
  • as well as include what goal or project would you like to be a part of developing with the Nuvein Foundation.

For additional information on what to include in your statement of interest, please view/download our memo on

NominationSeason_2013-2014

If you are interested in being considered for the Nuvein Executive Board, please contact us as follows:

We look forward to meeting any and all interested future board members!

La Puente Artwalk continues to use the Arts to build Community Identity and Pride

Redesigned La Puente Artwalk icon header by Heyzen Contreras

For nearly 2 years, a renaissance of sorts has been developing in the once self-admittedly sleepy town of La Puente, specifically, its Historic Old Town District.  In 2 years time, in spite of a crushing economic recession, political struggles and realignments, civic and community woes, a thriving arts movement has helped redefine and inspire a town that has been too often perceived negatively, to now view its own role in the San Gabriel Valley with renewed vigor and optimism.

Since its inaugural edition on Sat. February 18th of 2012, a growing confederation of business owners, local artists, community advocates, event organizers, educators, students, and an alliance between local charities, the local business association, and civic leadership has served to help offer the members of the La Puente community and visitors of the surrounding areas a unique quarterly event that serves to highlight local art, community, business, and culture.

Among its many architects are the Nuvein Foundation for Literature and the Arts, a CA 501(c)3 arts organization and the Old Town Puente Business Association, a CA 501 (c)6 civic association.

The La Puente Artwalk, referred to previously as ‘Un Poquito Mas Arte’ or ‘A Little More Art’, grew from both vision and perseverance.

Photograph of Star Theatre iconic “Star Light Tower”, taken by Sal Gomez.

The Artwalk is a naturally progression of the vision, passion, and drive of the  late founder of the Nuvein Foundation, Enrique Diaz, who among his many personal convictions maintained the idea that arts could transform communities, unite cultures, and inspire the individual. Since its inception, the Foundation has worked to promote its core values of EDUCATE, ENCOURAGE, and SHOWCASE of the arts in all its forms and facets. This charitable mission was the primary motivating force behind Chris Trevilla’s (subsequent and current President of the Nuvein Foundation) decision to work with the La Puente community to create an arts community.

The Artwalk is also an extension of the perseverance, resiliency, and determination of the La Puente community, who worked together to ensure the survival and resurgence of the Historic Old Town District in light of credible threats of razing and redevelopment at the expense of longtime business and property owners. Sensing a common interest in revitalizing Old Town La Puente, the community and its leaders then began working together with the Foundation as far as accommodating art spaces, and assisting with the navigation of civic leadership and city ordinances, and enlisting area partners and involving local students, the event benefitted and grew as a result. The aim of revitalizing the Old Town District and connecting youth to art was the primary motivating force behind Bob Berdin’s (then Public Relations officer and current President of the Old Town Puente Association) decision to become involved in developing and promoting the La Puente Artwalk.

Two years and 7 events later, the La Puente Artwalk continues to show all attendees what vision and perserverance can achieve by showcasing local art, music, poetry, performance, talent, and creativity. The La Puente Artwalk hopes to continue to use the Arts to transform the community of La Puente.

On behalf of the Nuvein Foundation, Old Town Puente Association, and the City of La Puente, all are invited to join us at the upcoming September 21st edition of the La Puente Artwalk.

EL MONTE, CA (August 2013) – The Nuvein Foundation for Literature and the Arts, in partnership with the Downtown El Monte Business Association, presents the 4th annual El Monte Dia de los Muertos on Saturday, October 19 from 1 pm until 6 pm at the Valley Mall in El Monte, CA. For the fourth edition of this event, the festivities will unfold between Lexington Ave and Cleminson St along Valley Mall. Thousands of community members and surrounding city Day of the Dead enthusiasts are expected to attend the annual celebration of Mexican culture and traditions.
The all day, family festival will showcase beautifully decorated altars created by local award-winning artists. Adding to the tapestry of color, calacas, paper mache masks, and papel picado displays will adorn the street showcasing the rich culture and mystic beauty of one Mexico’s most popular holidays. Event attendees have the opportunity to purchase unique items to take home from some of Southern California’s most gifted artists as well shop any of the Valley Mall’s hundred merchants and businesses.
